Employee Surveys – to outsource or manage in-house?

Chart of Time versus cost / Outsource v in-house

On the face of it, conducting an employee survey in-house is cheaper, but it requires a greater investment in time. Shaded area represents the minimum of effort (time) [x] is Surveylab! When you factor in the time investment and other benefits, outsourcing is more likely to look excellent value. What are the benefits of outsourcing to a survey company? Expertise, technical capability, … [Read more...]

Can you launch a survey by 2pm? Today?

Clock

This week we launched a survey for a new client in a little over 24 hours. When the survey is straight forward, with all the necessary project planning and questionnaire content written and reviewed, it is very feasible to turnaround survey production in just a day or two. For this survey we actually provided English and German language versions - kudos to Barbara for getting all the translated … [Read more...]

Avoiding errors in survey design

There are two blog posts published just before everyone went back to work after New Year's (and all that snow) which I thought are worth sharing. The first is Panel Crazy - an observation about the number of errors present in surveys. Sheila Wilson wrote Clients know that with the technology we now have, it is possible to script a project and complete the fieldwork online in a matter of hours. … [Read more...]

Incentives don’t guarantee a better survey response rate

I was inspired to blog this quick post after a friend forwarded me a promotional email they had received which offered expert insights into how to improve your survey's response rates by one hundred and something percent. Is Surveylab missing anything I wondered? So I downloaded the PDF and was pleased to see the answer was no (according to this particular list of insights), but then there was … [Read more...]

Sending emails on a Saturday has no effect to a survey’s response rate*

One Saturday lunchtime two weeks ago I logged onto one of our servers to send the email invites for two customer surveys that we field regularly. Some time ago the Messaging Times posed the question whether sending emails at the weekend is more effective than during the week - which got us thinking. We have looked at the best time to email (survey invites) in the past and generally concluded that … [Read more...]

“We need your feedback”

Another look at examples of emails about customer surveys with two common but very different approaches... Short and Sweet The first example is a transactional email after contacting APC for support on a new UPS (uninterruptable power supply - excellent customer service by the way and definitely happy to recommend APC to all as a result). A couple of days after my support case was resolved I … [Read more...]

Do phone surveys have a future?

Jeffrey Henning has written a very good article in Research magazine - do phone surveys have a future? The television didn’t make radio obsolete, even if it did push dramas, soap operas and serials on to the TV set. The article is based on the US market, but all his points apply to the UK too. Dan Wardle … [Read more...]

Improving survey response rates by email

An article on the web I bookmarked this week: You should follow me on twitter is a designer's findings experimenting with link text. A lot of people use the text follow me on twitter to link to their Twitter, but Dustin found that changing the text to You should follow me on twitter increased the click-thru rate by 10% (and tweaking that further he made it 12%). Now take a look at your last … [Read more...]

Using popup/exit surveys on a website

Implementing a "popup" survey is a (mostly) trivial task. Our solution at Surveylab requires 1 file to be uploaded to the website and then a couple of lines of code are inserted onto the page(s) of the website where the survey popup is to appear. Other survey software suppliers have a similar installation process. Visitors to the website will see the popup, and perhaps 2% click through to take … [Read more...]

When is the right time to send out customer survey emails?

From a questionnaire I chanced upon the other day: What is your attitude towards DIY? A range of answers were offered from I enjoy DIY to I loathe it and pay someone to do every job no matter how small (or something like that). I wanted to add another answer option Ask me when I've finished my project Ok, my answer is tongue in cheek but it highlights an important consideration when fielding a … [Read more...]
